Inspiration & Technique
I volunteer at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Faust Park, where I was interned previously. We had to do a project to finish our internship. I decided to create this sculpture because Psyche’s name means Butterfly and the soul. She was considered one of the most beautiful goddesses. I created her coming out of her Chrysalis. I built her like I do all my busts – starting with the skull, face, splitting it into two, hollowing it out, re-attaching, adding detail, then waiting several weeks to fire it in a kiln. Then I used polish as a patina and finally gilding with real 23 karat gold. She is currently on display at the Butterfly House in the conservatory.
