“The Wood Horse”
Inspiration & Technique
Scrimshaw is a very old art form. Sailors and Seaman were often noted wearing them or carrying them as amulets. I begin with an idea or a commissioned idea. I draw it lightly on the fossilized walrus ivory (which I order from Alaska) then I use a very fine scrimshaw carving tool to incise lines into the walrus ivory. I then apply black ink into the lines and wipe off the rest. I may do this several times to get the detail I’m looking for. I then apply a top coat to seal it in and a ring and silver plated necklace.
